I Find my Music in Movies

Never have I been one to fish for new tracks in the sea of music that covers 72% of the earth’s surface—I’ve always found it too daunting. This has meant that I acquire each new song from one of three sources: this radio station’s shelves, my sister and father (both of whom are much cooler than me), and from the movies I see.

So below are my top five favorite songs that I’ve acquired from cinema. I’ve linked to youtube videos of the songs in relation to their respective movies, so BEWARE OF SPOILERS.

1. Pulp Fiction: “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” by Urge Overkill
2. Kill Bill Vol. 2: “About Her” by Malcolm McClaren
3. Romeo + Juliet: “Talk Show Host” by Radiohead
4. Drive: “Nightcall” by Kavinsky
5. High Fidelity: “Dry the Rain” by The Beta Band

These are also all pretty good if not great movies. So watch them if you haven’t—or even if you have—and enjoy the kick-ass soundtracks!

  1. This is getting a bit more suvticjebe, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of neighbors will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune Social is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
